Colorado AI Exposure Atlas

2026 Edition · Employment data 2025 · Compiled by Christopher Martin

The Colorado AI Exposure Atlas estimates, for each of the state's 64 counties, how much of local employment sits in occupations whose tasks overlap substantially with what current AI systems can do. It combines 2025 county employment records with national staffing patterns and published occupation-level AI exposure scores; the result is an exposure score, a rank, and the occupation groups driving each.

Exposure is not a layoff forecast — it maps where change, as augmentation or automation, is positioned to arrive first. Statewide, 23.1% of UI-covered jobs are in high-exposure occupations; measured by payroll the share rises to 26.9%, because exposure skews toward higher-wage office work concentrated along the urban Front Range. Broomfield ranks first among counties at 35.2.

County occupation mixes are estimated from industry mix, not observed directly — the methodology explains how, and where the estimates are weakest.

Key findings

Every statement below is computed from the published dataset; the same figures appear in the county table and the downloads.

  1. More than a fifth of Colorado's UI-covered employment — about 661,000 of 2,860,276 jobs, or 23.1% — is in occupations highly exposed to current AI (exposure score 50.0 or more of 100).

  2. High-exposure occupations account for 23.1% of Colorado's jobs but 26.9% of its payroll, and the payroll share exceeds the job share in all 64 counties — exposure skews toward higher-wage work. The gap is widest in Gilpin County (13.4% of jobs; 18.6% of payroll).

  3. The five highest-scoring counties — Broomfield (35.2), Boulder (34.6), Denver (33.5), Douglas (33.3), and Arapahoe (33.0) — are all Front Range metro counties, and together they hold 44.9% of the state's UI-covered employment.

  4. County scores span 24.7 (Morgan) to 35.2 (Broomfield) on the 0–100 scale. The share of jobs in high-exposure occupations runs from 14.3% in Morgan County to 30.2% in Broomfield County — more than double.

  5. In observed AI usage (Anthropic Economic Index, Sept 2025), Colorado conversations lean toward augmentation over automation — 53.9% to 46.1%, a stronger augmentation lean than the 50.9%-to-49.1% U.S. baseline.

  6. In 17 of 64 counties, more than half of employment sits in industry cells suppressed in the public data, so their occupation mixes — and scores — are the most heavily estimated in the atlas. Together these counties hold 1.0% of state employment; the imputed share peaks at 86.4% in Gilpin County.
